CPAP saves a life

Situation
Patient John Gruhlke had a severe snoring problem and suffered from daytime exhaustion. His first sleep study, conducted at an area hospital, resulted in a bad experience. The CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) equipment given to him caused problems and Gruhlke eventually came to the Sleep Wellness Institute on the advice of his primary care physician.

Solution
After delivering a pleasant sleep-study experience, the Sleep Wellness Institute diagnosed Gruhlke with extreme obstructive sleep apnea and professionally fitted him with a CPAP mask. The mask is small, lightweight and comfortable. Gruhlke receives regular, thorough follow-up to ensure that he continues using his CPAP equipment and that it remains comfortable and problem-free.

“The Sleep Wellness Institute helped save my life. My sleep study experience was first-class, and my CPAP equipment is a huge improvement over what I had.”
− John Gruhlke

Proper Pediatric Diagnosis

Situation
A 13-year-old female patient had shown symptoms of sleep apnea since age 6, though no one realized it. Doctors said there was nothing physically wrong with her. School administrators urged the girl’s mother, Lisa Swift, to have her tested for Attention Deficit Disorder. Tests were negative. The patient continued suffering from exhaustion. Her grades plummeted as teasing from classmates increased. After Swift herself was diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea at the Sleep Wellness Institute, she decided to have her daughter tested.

Solution
The Sleep Wellness Institute conducted a sleep study and diagnosed the 13-year-old patient with severe sleep apnea. She was prescribed CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) treatment—drugs and behavioral therapy were not the answer. However, seven years of nighttime snoring and gasping had caused her tonsils to become severely swollen. After using the CPAP machine for a period of time, the patient was then able to undergo a badly needed tonsillectomy to remove swollen tissue. The CPAP treatment had, literally, changed her life overnight. She is now a much happier and healthier person. She still uses the CPAP at times, but doesn’t require it nightly.

“I can’t tell you how much better I feel, and I’m not being teased for not paying attention or falling asleep in class.”
− 13-year-old patient
