SLEEP WELLNESS INSTITUTE/STEINHAFEL’S
TEAM UP FOR BETTER SLEEP

Companies Work Together for Unique Community Event

Waukesha and West Allis, Wis., October 2, 2007 – Steinhafel’s Furniture Superstore and the Sleep Wellness Institute (SWI) in West Allis will team up this Saturday, Oct. 6, for a unique public information program that will examine sleep disruptions both from the standpoint of mattress problems and from the clinical standpoint of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Steinhafel’s community center on the lower level of its Superstore located on Hwy F just south of I-94 west. SWI President Mark Stoiber will give a presentation on sleep disorders, followed by brief discussion of the science of mattress manufacturing by representatives of various mattress companies. Attendees will be able to ask questions and fill out brief questionnaires that will help them to determine if consultation with a sleep specialist is appropriate.

The SWI is the only sleep disorders center in Wisconsin, and one of only 19 in the U.S., certified to offer advanced sleep technologist training. It is the largest and oldest independent sleep disorders center in the state, and is certified to diagnose and treat both adults and children by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

In addition, SWI has provided abbreviated training for Steinhafel’s staff members to assist them in recognizing when a customer may have the signs of a sleep disorder.

The idea for the community forum was the brainchild of Gary Steinhafel, President of the company. He and others from Steinhafel’s met with Stoiber to design the program.

Oct. 1 -7 is National Sleep Apnea Awareness Week. Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by pauses in a person’s breathing briefly during sleep as many as 50-100 times per hour, every hour of every night. In some cases, most notably that of Green Bay Packer legend Reggie White, it can lead to fatal heart attacks in one’s sleep. Stoiber says 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, and 38,000 die each year from its complications.

The event is free and open to the public.
